You need suspense to draw the reader in. Build up the tension.
A good balance of Gore and Suspense
I know I'm late to the party with this reply, but maybe you're still working on your story...
As Marquis DeBlood and Evan said, Suspense is key. But I also think any great story needs at least one character that I care about. For me personally, Gore may be more essential in a movie than in something that I'm reading, but if you've got a good character and a suspenseful story, that'll keep me reading.
A great twist at the end is always good.
