Casting announcements have officially begun for Hannibal, the NBC television series by Bryan Fuller that tells of the early days of Hannibal Lecter.

And while we do not know, at this time, who is playing the eponymous cannibal - made famous by Anthony Hopkins, but also assumed by Brian Cox in the film Manhunter - we now know who is going to play Will Graham, the FBI agent responsible for Lecter's capture.

According to Deadline, Hugh Dancy is playing Graham.  Dancy appears on The Big C and recently co-starred in Martha Marcy May Marlene.

Hannibal will focus on the budding relationship between Graham and Lecter.  A weird, cat and mouse relationship at that.  Fans of Thomas Harris' book series focusing on Lecter know that we were offered glimpses into Graham/Lecter's past in the novel Red Dragon, which served as the source material for Manhunter and, later, Red Dragon, the movie.

William Petersen played Graham in Manhunter; Ed Norton took on the role in Red Dragon.

To be honest, I'm somewhat curious about this series.  There is plenty of rich material to mine when it comes to the dynamic between Graham and Lecter, it's just all about how the concept.  Naturally, we'll be seeing the Lecter/Graham mentorship - before the latter comes to realize that Lecter is a, well, cannibal. So, will this be a killer-of-the-week series with the two uniting to track down maniacs?

Bryan Fuller is pulling double duty these days.  Not only is he working on Hannibal, but he's overseeing Mockingbird Lane (The Munsters reboot) as well.

Stay tuned for more updates as they come in!
