Marquis caught up with "Living the American Nightmare" Director Pawl Bazile and got the inside scoop on the highly anticipated film of the year! Let's here what he had to say...
H-P: Could you tell us a little bit about the film.
PB: Living the American Nightmare is a documentary about things being just out of your grasp. The setting for the film is the goth/punk/death rock world and the main character is Myke Hideous. Myke's favorite band was the Misfits and his dream was to sing for them. After years of paying dues he got his chance and it wasn't what he thought it would be. Along the way, the story explores heavy issues for artists like money, road fatigue, drugs and how much is "too much' to give. We have awesome interviews with tremendous artists to weigh in on this like Bill Ward, Bobby Steele, Merle Allin, J-Sin Trioxin,Argyle Goolsby, the Bouncing Souls, Legs McNeil, Steve Zing, Type O Negative, and Peter Steele giving us his last interview before his passing.
H-P: What inspired you to create this?
PB: i was mainly inspired by reading Myke's book. After hearing him talk about the "rockstar" experience I thought we'd have a slightly different take on the stories we're used to hearing about musicians. We've all heard about the drama, the drugs, ect... but the guy at the end of the story usually ends up getting what he wants. A lot more often you DON'T become famous, you DON'T get everything you worked for. Disappointment is a big part of life and I think everyone can relate to a story about unrecognized talent, and working hard for almost nothing. My mom even relates to it, and she is more in the "I Love Lucy" world than the death rock world.

H-P: Is there something you hope people will get out of this?
PB: The great thing about the film is depending of who's watching it, it will be a very different film. If you're a musician, it will scare the shit out of you. If you're a Misfits fan, its putting light on a small part of the Misfits story that information junkies are going to love, Type O/Peter Steele fans will cry. If you know nothing about any of these bands it will humanize and expose this world, this part of a subculture that a lot of people are unaware exists.
H-P: Who are some of the guests in the film?
PB: Everyone in this film, belongs in it.... we have old members of the Misfits (Bobby Steele, Franche' Coma, and Mr. Jim), We have members and former members of Danzig (Steve Zing and Todd Youth), Members of Overkill (D.D. Verni and Ron). GG Allin''s brother Merle Allin from the Murder Junkies is hysterical. Joey Z (Life of Agony), Paul Bento (Carnivore) and Quincy (Murphy's Law) add real warmth to the film. Loki, J-Sin Trioxin, and JV Bastard from Mister Monster, Argyle fuckin' Goolsby from Blitzkid/Gorgeous Frankenstein...... and that's without mentioning Bill Ward of Black Sabbath. Ground breakers like Legs McNeil who came up with the word "punk", Arturo Vega who designed the iconic Ramones logo, and Michael Alago who is the A&R genus discovered the likes of Metallica and White Zombie. Johnny Kelly (Danzig) Kenny Hickey and Peter Steele (all from Type O Negative) steal this film.... and of corse former Empire Hideous and Misfits vocalist Myke. I still haven't named everyone, we have a loaded roster.
H-P: Will this be in theatres or will it go straight to DVD?
PB: I want to take it to festivals 1st, and then hopefully get it in theaters. it all depends on what kind of distributor we choose... we have lots of options right now.
H-P: Where will people be able to purchase this?
PB: People will be able to purchase this very soon. Shooting for this fall for it to be completely out there.
H-P: What's next for you?
PB: I already have a 5 year plan. I plan on making a number of plays into films, and I want to write and direct a kids show.... but 1st me and my cousin are already planning a 2nd documentary call "Savage" about biker culture, gangs, and our murdered uncle.
H-P: Any final words?
PB: Last words? Motherfuckers, we're not even warmed up yet!

LIVING THE AMERICAN NIGHTMARE - The new documentary film that details the harsh realities of the lives of musicians and their place in the industry today.
New York/New Jersey 2011 - “LIVING THE AMERICAN NIGHTMARE” is a film directed by PAWL BAZILE. LTAN, which is expected to be released in the Fall of this year, is an exploration of the cost to working class people who live the “rock-star” lifestyle and the pitfalls of achieving fame without a payday.
“Living the American Nightmare” is based on a book titled “King of an empire to the Shoes of a Misfits: the Memoirs of Myke Hideous” the former lead vocalist of the horror-punk band, THE MISFITS. In 1998, the visual artist and singer, MYKE HIDEOUS was asked to tour as the lead vocalist of the legendary rock band. Before his dream could take flight, and after only two overseas tours, Myke was abruptly dismissed from the band. LTAN chronicles the aftermath, emotion, and rediscovery of what it is to live the life of an artist in America. An innovated and creative visual artist and singer, Hideous also helped form and fronted band THE EMPIRE HIDEOUS, BRONX CASKET CO., and SPYSOCIETY99.
The film takes us on a sobering journey, which explores the harsh realities of artists who struggle with personal roadblocks, mental anguish, and poverty, while trying to maintain a creative balance.
LTAN also incorporates input of music heavyweights, and features the last known filmed interview with the late, and much controversial PETER STEELE (Type O Negative/Carnivore), as well as interviews with Rock ‘n’ Roll Hall of Famer BILL WARD (Black Sabbath), BOBBY STEELE (Misfits/Undead), STEVE ZING (Samhain/Danzig/Mouring Noise), D.D. VERNI (Overkill), legendary punk journalist LEGS MCNEIL (Punk Magazine/Spin Magazine/”Please Kill Me; the Uncensored Oral History of Punk”) and many more.
According to PAWL BAZILE, “Living the American Nightmare” is poised to become a classic because it’s earmarked to become the definitive film, which looks into the lives of unsigned musicians trying to make a living in the highly competitive, and often unglamorous cut throat music industry. It will surely be a centerpiece for fans of gothic or death-rock.
