Director Chuck Russell, known for imaginative fantasy and horror classics like A Nightmare on Elm Street 3: Dream Warriors, the 1988 remake of The Blob, The Mask, Eraser, and The Scorpion King, returns to the genre with a bold reimagining of Kevin S. The story follows Emily (Madison Iseman, Annabelle Comes Home) and her fiancé Christian (Aaron Dominguez, Hulu’s Only Murders in the Building) as they discover an ancient Wiccan pendulum board while preparing to open a bistro in New Orleans’ French Quarter. Emily becomes fascinated with the board’s powers, leading her to the ancient spirit of the Queen of Witches. In an attempt to save his fiancée, Christian consults occult expert Alexander Babtiste (Jamie Campbell Bower, Netflix’s Stranger Things, the Twilight saga), who harbors dark secrets. The film is shot in Montreal by cinematographer Yaron Levy (Universal Soldier: Day of Reckoning) and also stars David La Haye (True North), Charlie Tahan (Netflix’s Ozark), Antonia Desplat (AppleTV+’s Shantaram), and Mel Jarnson (Mortal Kombat). Building on the international acclaim of his brilliant La Llorona (2019), director Jayro Bustamante’s Rita blends mythical fantasy and whimsical visuals with themes of childhood innocence and the intense emotional impact of a story inspired by a tragic real-life event, where 41 young women tragically died in a fire at a Guatemalan orphanage during a protest against inhumane conditions. Central to the film is Guiliana Santa Cruz’s powerful performance, representing all the young women who suffered. The narrative powerfully explores female anger, yet Bustamante never loses focus on the fact that at its core, Rita is a story of girlhood, dreams, and the rediscovery of innocence through female solidarity.
